A Black Plaque was placed for Mr Val Irvine McCalla, the Founder of The Voice Newspaper, on 22 June in Brixton. Now, on Monday 23 August 2021,
in association with the BBC's Songs of Praise,
he is being honoured with a Blue Plaque!
After working for the Royal Air Force as a pilot and then as an accountant,
Val recognised that young British-born Black people were not represented in the mainstream press
– they had no "voice". So in 1982, he launched The Voice Newspaper – Britain’s first black owned newspaper. The rest is history!
